I have pledged to join SHAPEAmerica in getting 50 million kids active for 60 minutes a day by the year 2029. We offer many opportunities for students and families to be physically active at the Integrated Arts Academy. Before school three days a week you can join us at 7:45 a.m. to Move it! Move it! on the IAA outdoor track and even enjoy a fresh fruit or vegetable in our gardens. I have worked to encourage all teachers at the IAA to participate in brain breaks in their classroom through videos and other activities to engage learners and awaken their bodies and minds. My goal is three 5 minute brain breaks a day. IAA students also have an opportunity to access the playground before lunch for 25 minutes. Each student has Physical Education class two times a week for at least 3o minutes a class. I would love to see the total minutes increase to 90 minutes a week!

As part of our first gymnastics class, second graders were challenged to make a three body part balance with their group members. They could have three parts total touch the mat but only two feet. They were super creative and enjoying the challenge! What are your ideas? Can you meet the challenge? Submit your pictures to them via email at [email protected]. These students accepted various challenges in small groups. We thought making a plan, setting goals, listening to all ideas, and encouraging each other were important to the team's success. Of course, celebrating and bringing good vibes to the group helped as well. I was amazed at the collaboration skills of each group and I am psyched to see what this next generation will accomplish. Our final iPad project is complete! In collaboration with Ms Maggie's and Ms Emily's class, we created a book to share with others about how we can be safe in our school community. We made our book into a movie to share with others in our online community. We worked on identifying ways that we can be safe in a physically active setting as well as in our classroom and the lunchroom. We also worked on using our voice to tell the story. In addition, we learned about how to safely use technology in our classroom. Hope you enjoy and please free to give us any feedback. Wow! Ms Emily's Kindergarten friends used our 10 iPads to take pictures of each other being safe on the playground. This is part of a bigger collaborative project of making books to share with other kindergarten students using technology. Book Creator comes next! Stay tuned... Today I went with Mr. Leal's class for a walk to the Echo Center. We studied friction and tried to build a snowboarding ramp for Barton Bear. The class also practiced the snowboarding skills of stance, jumps, and even practiced a few grabs of the nose and tail of our boards. It was all part of the Burton Riglet Snowboarding Park that will be coming to Echo this November. I am also hoping to use this equipment in all the K-2 classes this winter. Stay tuned:) Thursday, October 30th we welcomed Ms. Joni to our school. She works with Circus Smirkus and has a five day residency at IAA. We practiced the first five circus secrets: Try, Try Again, Try a new way, Watch, and Listen. We tried Feather Balancing with peacock feathers. We all were able to do it! I can't wait for our next lesson. What's next? Tight rope walking? Unicycle riding? Plate spinning? Find out this week in PE... Yesterday was the 2nd Annual Fun Run at the Integrated Arts Academy. We had great weather and enthusiasm for the event. As a physical educator, my hope was to have kids and school community members active and practicing support for other movers while enjoying themselves in a fun and motivating environment. I have always enjoyed running in events where there was music and enthusiastic fans as I ran. Right when I would hit the wall, a random person or band could inspire me to keep going. This really is more than just in running but in life too! What I am wondering is, how do I know if this goal was achieved with the fun run? I saw a lot of smiling faces and have heard from a lot of staff that is was fun! What do you think? |
